Meet Death In Steel
Mill Accidents Here
Two men were killed in falls yesterday while at work in Gary works.
One of the men, Orval M. Akers, age 45, of 6734 Hobart road, a structural iron worker employed by the American Bridge company, was killed instantly when he fell 90 feet from the roof of the coke plant.
The other victim, Ray O. Anderson, age 44, of Joliet, a wireman, was injured fatally when he fell from the tracks of an unloader to the ore dock 12 feet below. He died in Mercy hospital.
Akers, who has lived in Gary for 16 years, is survived by his widow, Ruby; five sons, William, an aviation cadet stationed at Big Springs, Tex.; Kenneth, a sailor in the navy stationed at Pearl Harbor, and Robert, John and Dennis of Gary; two daughters, Betty Lou and Bernice; four brothers, Carl of Montezuma, Ind.; Roy, a soldier in U.S. army; Ray and John of Gary; a sister, Mrs. A. L. Kinard of Gary, and his mother, Mrs. Lena Akers, also of Gary.
The body was taken to Anderson's chapel pending completion of funeral arrangements.
Anderson is survived by his widow; one son and one daughter.
His body was taken to the Williams and Burns funeral home and removed to Joliet today. Funeral services will be held in St. Raymond's church Saturday morning.

Orval Akers
Funeral services for Orval Akers, age 45, of 6734 Hobart road, a structural steel worker employed by the American Bridge company, killed Tuesday when he fell from the room of the coke plant in Gary works, will be held in Anderson's chapel at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon. Rev. Harold Schmidt will officiate. The body will then be taken to Clinton, Ind., where other services and burial will take place Monday.
