Ray Akers

Ray Akers, who resided his boyhood years in Parke County and returned to the Brazil area after his retirement, died at 3:00 a.m. today in Clay County Hospital. He was 67 and was residing at 38 N. Ashley St.

Akers retired in 1970 from the American Bridge Co. at Gary and moved to Harmony where he made his home for three years before moving to the Brazil address. He was born in Edgar Co., Illinois, the son of the late William Louis and Lina (Mitchell) Akers who moved to Parke County in 1913. For 45 years he lived and worked in Gary and vicinity. He was a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Avis (Hedge) Akers, originally of this area, to whom he was married on Dec. 17, 1955. Mrs. Akers, a teacher, has taught at Forest Park Elementary School since their return here.

Other survivors include three step-daughters, Mrs. Kermita English, Portage, Ind.; Mrs. Averill Predania, Colorado City, Colo.; and Mrs. Anita Holland, Louisville, Ky.; 11 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Edna Kinard, Paris, Tenn.; three brothers, Carl, Montezuma; Roy, Dallas, Oregon; and John Akers, Hobart, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.

Also preceding him in death were a sister, Bonnie Marie, who died in infancy, and one brother, Orval Akers.

Services will be conducted in Miller and Sons Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park, north of Terre Haute. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday.
