Jacob B. Burkhardt Dies At Home Here
Jacob N. Burkhardt, 72, retired farmer, died at his home in Carmi Saturday, January 1. Funeral services were held at the St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 4, with the Rev. Walter Reif officiating.
Pallbearers were Fred Sefried, Ernest Maurer, Raymond Maurer, Carl Maurer, Norman Beck and Ralph Gates. Flower bearers were Marjorie Beck, Eileen Sefried, Oma Finley, Lucille Beck, Evelyn Beck, Pauline Beck, Amelia Stallings and Esther Fobar.
Burkhardt was born in Carmi Township June 10, 1871. He was married in 1902 to Rosa Gates. To this union six children were born, Lawrence, Arthur J., Leroy, Edna, Frieda and William. He united with the St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church in 1903 and attended until ill health prevented.
He was a farmer all his life until the family moved to Carmi in March, 1943. He leaves to mourn his death his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Frieda Darnell of Carmi, and Miss Edna, at home; two sons, Lawrence, at home, and Leroy, of Hobart, Ind.; one brother, John Burkhardt of Vincennes, Ind.; three sisters, Mrs. Fred Sefried, Mrs. Rosa Maurer and Mrs. Jacob Maurer, all of Carmi; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Two sons and two sisters preceded him in death.
