Paul Burkhardt

Paul Burkhardt was born in 1843 in Baden, Germany. When eleven years of age, his family decided to try their fortunes in the new country, as so many others of their countrymen were doing. Accordingly they set sail for America, and eventually located in Carmi township, White county, Illinois. His father was Simon Burkhardt, well known by the old settlers of the township and who died in 1870.

Mr. Burkhardt has a war record of which he well may be proud, for enlisting in August, 1862, he served until the end of the war, when he returned to this township.

He has been twice married. First to Mary Thornton in 1868, second to Christina Funk, a native of Baden, German, in October 1879. To this marriage were born the following children: Louise, Mary, Christina, Charles and Henry, who are all at home.

By close attention to business, Mr. Burkhardt has been successful in accumulating a comfortable amount of this world's goods and now lives in comfort on his nice farm in Section 16, Carmi township, and devotes his time to farming and stock raising. To these pursuits he applies careful and up-to-date methods, and therefore his success. He is a member of long standing of the Evangelical church.
