Rose Maurer Dies Sunday In Hospital
Death came to Mrs. Rose Maurer at 12:20 Sunday morning at the Carmi Township Hospital after an illness of about four months. She was taken from her home, 505 North Sixth street, Carmi, to the hospital about ten days ago and every effort made to prolong her life, but to no avail.
She was born February 8, 1877, the daughter of Jacob and Barbara Burkhardt, in this county and spent her entire 78 years in and around Carmi. Many years ago she was united in marriage to John Maurer, who survives. She was a lady of quiet manner, her entire life being devoted to her family and her friends. Her self-sacrifice for others was an outstanding characteristic and she will be greatly missed by many.
Mrs. Maurer was a member of the Carmi Emmanuel Evangelical United Brethren Church and her Christian principles were strong and exemplified in her daily life.
Besides her husband she leaves one son, Ernest of Enfield; five daughters, Mrs. Ed (Lydia) Bachman and Mrs. Alex (Bertha) Nibbling, both of Carmi; Mrs. Charles (Minnie) Foreman, Chigo; Mrs. William (Anna) Hoffman of Nashville, Indiana, and Mrs. C. P. (Ruby) McBride of North Hollywood, California. A grandson, Loren Morris, has made his home with the Maurers since the death of his mother in 1950. One brother, John Burkhardt of Vincennes, Indiana, and one sister, Mrs. Jacob Maurer, Jr., of Carmi, along with 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, survive.
Funeral services are being held this afternoon, Monday, at 1:30 at the Carmi Emmanuel Evangelical United Brethren Church with Rev. C. R. Bitzer officiating. Burial will be in Rieb cemetery with the Kittinger Funeral Home in charge.
