Mrs. Christine Burkhard Died Sunday Evening
Born At Baden, Germany, Coming To The United States With Colony Of Immigrants.
Another of White County's aged citizens was taken this week, Mrs. Christine Burkhard having passed away Sunday evening, May 10, 1936, at 10 o'clock.
Mrs. Christine Burkhard was born in Baden, Germany on July 28, 1853, and at the time of death was 82 years, 9 months and 13 days, after an illness of seven weeks.
She had been in poor health for a number of years, but was always able to be up and about her home.
When a young woman she came to the United States with a colony of immigrants in the early Spring of 1879, and in the same year, on October 26th, she was united in marriage with Paul Burkhard and settled on the farm where she has resided for 57 years. Mr. Burkhard passed away April 20, 1904.
She was of a quiet disposition and was a loving Christian mother, always with her home and household duties. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Church her entire life. She did not attend church services very often, but was always willing and ready to help where help was needed.
She leaves to mourn her departure five children, three daughters and two sons, Mrs. August Stocke, Mrs. John E. Bohleber, Mrs. Christina Feagan, Charles and Henry Burkhard, and seven grandchildren, Rolla and Edwin Stocke, Louisa and Edith Bohleber, Hubert and Curtis Bohleber and Stauton Newton, also one aged brother, Henry Funk, of Chicago.
Rev. D. E. Werner, pastor of St. John's Evangelical Church, conducted the funeral, which was held at the church Tuesday afternoon, May 12th, at two o'clock. Interment was in St. John's Cemetery. Walton & Stein had charge of the funeral arrangements.
Pallbearers were Hubert and Curtis Bohleber, Jacob Burkhard, Ed Erkman, Ed Stocke and Charles Stein. Carrying the flowers were Catherine Nix, Freida Burkhard, Louise and Edith Bohleber, Mrs. Ed Stocke and Mrs. Ed Bachman.
