Maurer Retires From General Telephone
Carl “Bud” Maurer, local central office switchman for General Telephone Company, retired Thursday, January 26th after 38 years of service. He was given a dinner by his fellow employees at the Carmi exchange building. Approximately 50 employees attended.
Bud began his telephone career in 1937 with Illinois Commercial Telephone Company, a Gen Tel predecessor, as a truck driver. He then held various other positions of cable splicer's helper, cable splicer, serviceman and central office switchman. He has held the switchman's position since 1953.
He stated that his toughest job with the company occurred several years ago when all crews worked seven straight days to install a new switching center in Ziegler. However, he said that the company had been a good employer and the working conditions were good. Bud and his wife, Irene, have been married 40 years. They have two children; Allan of Mt. Vernon, and Margret Ann Garner of Crossville. They also have six grandchildren.
Upon his retirement he plans to spend more time at his new lake fishing. He and his wife also plan to do some traveling.
