Jacob Maurer, Sr. Died Monday

Prominent Man Living North
of Carmi Had Been In Poor
Health For Months

The death of Jacob Maurer, one of the best known pioneer residents of White County, occurred at his home north of Carmi on Monday, July 10, at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 18 days.

His passing was not unexpected, still it brought grief to many, as everybody who knew Jake Maurer liked and respected him.

Mr. Maurer was born in Augsburg, Germany, October 22, 1854. He was married to Miss Catherine Ziegler October 18, 1878, and twelve children blessed this union, eight of whom are living, four boys and four girls: Harry, Jake, John, Reuben, Mrs. Mollie Gillihan, Mrs. Lillie Dodson, Katie and Helen Maurer.

A thrifty farmer of the old school, Mr. Maurer devoted his entire life to his occupation. He was ever progressive in his views and industrious in his efforts, working early and late on his farm.

For many years he took an active interest in the White County Agricultural Association and aided greatly in the growth of the Fair from the standpoint of agriculture.

When a young man Mr. Maurer was converted and united with the Evangelical Church, where he remained a faithful Christian until his death.

During the cyclone in 1925, Mr. Maurer suffered the loss of his farm buildings and serious bodily injuries, but with the help of the Red Cross and neighbors and friends he re-established himself, facing his reverses courageously and with grim determination set about to continue his battle for the livelihood of himself and family.

For several years he has been in failing health and for a number of months he has been confined to his home.

He leaves to mourn their loss the widow, eight children, twenty-five grandchildren and six great grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends. A sister, Mrs. Anna Ziegler, of Denver, Colorado, also survives.

Funeral services were held at the Evangelical Church Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. D. Mast. The Odd Fellows, of which he was a member, had charge of the funeral and members of that organization acted as pall bearers. The grandchildren were in charge of the flowers. W. R. Archer was funeral director. Interment at Maple Ridge Cemetery.
