A Good Man Is Called Away

Mr. James Clinton Sturm Passed Peacefully Away Saturday Morning, February 8, 1919

Saturday morning, February 8, 1919, the spirit of Mr. James Clinton Sturm peacefully took its flight from this vale of tears to that bourne from whence no traveler returns.

Mr. Sturm was the son of Israel and Sarah Sturm; was born May 26, 1852, and was aged 66 years, 8 months and 12 days.

His early life was spent near the place of his birth. He came to Illinois in 1892, first settled near Enfield, thence to Concord, then to New Haven, then to Mt. Olive neighborhood, at which place he resided for the past nine years.

He professed faith in Christ at a revival meeting that was being held at Wilburn school house in the year 1882. Shortly afterward he united with the church at the same place, but in the course of several years changed his membership to Mt. Pleasant M. E. church in Illinois, in which he lived a devoted member till his death.

He was married to Miss Irena Alldridge February 16, 1873. To this union were born ten children, three of whom preceded him in death, Lawrence, James C., and Mrs. Della Joseph. Those who survive are: Mrs. John Kingery, Jasper, John, Mrs. Oliage Saltsman, Mrs. Josie Sewell, Mrs. Mary Lauderdale and Homer. He is also survived by his wife, one brother, John Sturm, 23 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Sturm had been in declining health for the past several months, gradually growing weaker from day to day till his physical endurance could last no longer and his last good-bye was said. The angel of the Lord quietly took his spirit to its final resting place, where we have every evidence to believe is in the presence of the angels of heaven, even now.

We, his friends and neighbors, know for a surety that at Sunday school he had a place, at prayer meeting his seat was filled. At other church services he was an untiring worker, always ready and anxious to preach, pray and sing the praises of our Heavenly King.

Brother Sturm will be greatly missed as a husband, father and neighbor. We can only say, “A gallant life has gone out.” And who shall ascend unto the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands and a pure heart, who hath not lifted up his soul to vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessings from the Lord, and the righteousness from the God of his salvation.

The funeral service was held at Mt. Olive church, being conducted by Rev. Stokes, assisted by the Revs. Montgomery and Shook. The esteem in which Mr. Sturm was held was shown by the large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery near by.

Men die, but sorrow never dies;
The crowding years divide in vain.
And the wide world is knit with ties
Of common brotherhood in pain.
