Falls From Tree,
Dies At His Home
Falling from a tree he was trimming in the yard between the homes of Dave Wheeler and Clyde Majors, John Smiley, 75, was injured last Friday and died at 1 a.m. Tuesday at his home on Water Street.
Mr. Smiley and some other men were trimming trees when the accident occurred. When he fell, one of Smiley's knees struck a saw on the ground. He was placed in the Kittinger ambulance and taken to Dr. J. Z. Stanley, who treated him while he lay in the ambulance.
Dr. Stanley urged that Mr. Smiley be taken to a hospital but the injured man demurred and was taken to his home.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Helen Smiley, and a foster daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Salesman, of East St. Louis.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Kittinger Funeral Home, with the Rev. J. L. Summers officiating. Burial was in the Kuykendall Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Norman Stephans, Raymond Dill, Max Jordan, Grover Emery, John Yates and Henry Hutchinson.
