George C. Ziegler

George C. Ziegler, of the manufacturing firm of Ziegler & Remwald, Carmi, was born in Germany in 1848. He was the oldest child born to Jacob and Catherine (Gomer) Ziegler.

His parents came to the United States in 1852, settling in White county, Illinois, and embarked in farming which was successfully followed until the father's death in 1864. His mother is still living.

Our subject was reared on the farm, attending the common schools, and began his life in farming pursuits. He was married in 1875 to Magdalena Miller, a native of the county, and daughter of William Miller, an old farmer in this section.

Our subject moved to Carmi the year of his marriage, and bought his present business. In the course of a few years the present partnership was formed, which has continued ever since. They employ the most men of any manufacturing company in Carmi, usually carrying on their pay roll about fifty men. They make staves and heading, conduct a planing mill and handle lumber of all kinds.

Our subject has always been quite active in Republican politics. He served in 1874 and 1875 as tax collector of Carmi township. He served for six years as alderman in the city council, and two years as Mayor of Carmi. By careful financial management he has succeeded in greatly reducing the city debt, and made many public improvements.

In 1895 his wife died, leaving four children - William, Jacob, Samuel and Harry.

In 1896 he married Lizzie Baumgardner Schlichenmier. To this union two children have been born - Clarence and Allen.

He is a member of the Evangelical Association and has been a member of the school board for six years.
